How to remove Spyware Protect 2009

Postby Tom on 12 May 2009, 18:36

Last night I had my computer infected with Spyware Protect 2009. After a few hours of work I managed to remove it.
I think I got it in the first place from a web site I visited, Unfortunately, that day I visited at least 40-50 sites, so I am not sure where it came from.

If your computer is infected with SpywareProtect 2009 you will notice pop-up windows in the right lower corner of your computer screen. It will tell you that your computer is infected and that you must buy Spyware Protect2009 to be able to remove it. DO NOT buy this! The spyware will not be removed once you buy it.

After spending a few hours on the Net it looks like that one removal solution does not work for everyone. Here is how I did it.

Click simultaneously on Ctrl Alt Delete on your keyboard a Windows Task Manager window will pop-up.
Go to Processes tab and find an select sysguard.exe and delete it.
This will stop Spyware Protect 2009 pop-ups but it will not fix your problem as yet.
You will notice that when you try to visit web sites using your IE browser it will redirect you to browser-security.microsoft.com/block.php?r=7.0 prompting you to buy the software. That web site is not Microsoft site, so don't do it.

What you should do is find sysguard.exe file in Windows folder and delete it.
Once you delete it check if you can find SYSGUARD.EXE-0915AC98.pf If yes delete this file too.
If you can not find it check this windows subfolder: c/windows/prefetch
To make your browser work go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ and delete file iehelper.dll , once you delete it try to find iehelper.dll.ren and delete it as well.

If you manage to do this, you will remove Spyware Protect 2009 from your computer.

Once you delete all those files, remove them from your recycle bin as well.

If you have AVG antivirus software installed, run it as well. It will find Spyware Protect 2009 files and it will quarantine those files.
Good Luck.
